BESS Noise Assessment

The energy storage sector has grown rapidly in recent years, and our team has worked closely with Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) developers and manufacturers along the way to solve noise issues and deliver positive outcomes for challenging projects.

We have a wealth of experience in providing noise consultancy services for BESS (and Solar) projects throughout the UK. We have been involved at all stages of project lifecycles, from early feasibility studies, through planning and detailed specification of the final plant such that noise limits will be met, up to compliance monitoring of operational sites.

Core Services

  • Input to feasibility and constraints studies and provision of preliminary advice;

  • EIA Screening / Scoping;

  • Baseline surveys;

  • Construction activity and construction traffic noise assessment;

  • Operational noise assessment in accordance with BS 4142:2014+A1:2019 and with LPA supplementary guidance;

  • Consultation with the LPA Environmental Health Services to aid a smooth route through planning and avoid objections;

  • Detailed iterative mitigation modelling to consider the ability of a development to meet appropriate noise limits and advise on which attenuation methods may be the most effective;

  • Inputs to Construction Environmental Management Plans (CEMPs);

  • Post-submission support, including review and input to draft planning conditions; and

  • Compliance monitoring

Our experience with BESS and Solar schemes has highlighted the importance of early engagement with the Local Planning Authority (LPA) to aid their understanding of the operational profile of the schemes, allowing appropriate context to be included within the noise assessment.

We have good working relationships with many LPA Environmental Health Departments and are familiar with their supplementary guidance for noise assessments, where applicable.

Accu’s team has worked directly with various BESS technology suppliers to improve the quality of their noise data, allowing us to greatly reduce uncertainty within the assessments, thereby minimising the risk that any consented development will face noise complaints or not be compliant with its consented noise limits at the operational stage.

Our engagement with a range of suppliers, including Tesla, SunGrow, Canadian Solar and CATL has given us deep insight into the noise levels produced by different battery units and the most effective ways to mitigate potential noise impacts arising from their operation.

We are engaging communicators, providing feedback and updates throughout the BESS noise assessment process. Our reporting style is clear and concise, and we aim to provide deliverables which are easily readable by someone from a non-technical background. Our written communication is supplemented by high-quality, eye-catching technical drawings and graphics, designed with ease of interpretation in mind.
